Can I fix a 40 year old Sinclair ZX80 bug?
I wrote a game back in 1982 that really needs improvement. Can I fix it, and make something even better now?

Instant Cine Film? Polavision and Polaroid's fall
Переглядів 22 тис.2 місяці тому
Part one - Polaroid's rise: ua-cam.com/video/uK3F1d9YbqI/v-deo.html Polaroid tried to create a crazy instant cine film format. But let’s put that into some context. By the 1970s Polaroid were riding high, printing money with their line of easy-to-use cameras that produced instant pictures. In 1979 they did around £1.1B ($1.4B USD, €1.3B, $2.1B AUD) of business around the world. The new plastic ...

Link to part 2 - Polaroid's downfall: ua-cam.com/video/fRfilvlLQRQ/v-deo.html The Polaroid SX-70 was arguably the best instant camera ever made. Elegant, practical, and simple to use, it took the world by storm in the early 1970s. But why was the company that made it called Polaroid, and what series of clunky cameras did it take to get to this point? Check out the Analog Resurgence UA-cam chann...
Forget the Walkman! Sony's Revolutionary Radio
Переглядів 28 тис.3 місяці тому
When it comes to historic Sony devices the Walkman gets all the attention, but the TR-55 has to be the most important device in the company’s history. It sparked a revolution in radio, and gave the company the financial clout to come up with Trinitron, the Walkman of course, the 3½” floppy, MiniDisc, the PlayStation, Blu-ray and Betamax. Some of them were of course more successful than others! ...

The UK has standardised around one type of three pin plug, so just why is there a completely different style 2 pin plug in British bathrooms, and why doesn’t it have an earth pin? Surely that’s more dangerous as with all the water in a bathroom? Well, like many UK electrical standards, it’s a well thought out solution to provide the maximum protection. But just why is it the shape it is? Well, ...

I’ve been a big fan of projectors ever since I got my first one in the 1990s. At that time I could get a 120” or 3m image at a time when you were lucky to get a 35” or 89cm cathode ray tube TV screen. Admittedly it wasn’t the best resolution - Laserdisc only offered 425 lines which meant for some pretty chunky pixels! LCD screen TVs have caught up to the point where you can buy a 72” or 1.8m sc...
Why "Victor"? The JVC Story
Переглядів 84 тис.6 місяців тому
If you know one thing about JVC it’s that they invented VHS, probably because they won’t stop banging on about it! But JVC has a long history that goes back to the start of the 20th century, and it doesn’t begin in Japan, but New Jersey. What’s with the “Victor” name in the Japan Victor Company, how did a Japanese company with American roots fair during the Second World War, and why haven’t we ...

Quadraphonic sound promised so much in 1970 but by the end of the decade it had been and gone. Surely it was the next great thing after high fidelity stereo records just a few years earlier? Why Ceefax & Oracle Changed How We Live

For some people, teletext was just something that had always been there. But for certain older people like me, who can remember TV before teletext, it was a godsend. Before this the idea of instantly finding out the latest news, weather or sports scores was impossible. Teletext changed all that, in 40 columns and 24 rows of blocky text and gaudy graphics. And it became popular despite the expen...

The "full colour" version wasn't really any different to having coloured gel over a black and white screen, apart from it being able to turn all-red. Otherwise it just had fixed blocks of colour that worked like an overlay. Basically the output hardware would change the colour at set timings to create blocks of colour, like an overlay, or just leave it all red. It couldn't show colours wherever it wanted outside of the fixed blocks :) Must have caused pretty bad screen burn after a few years...

As an American, I've never encountered Sinclair computers in the flesh. I think I saw the four-line Timex Sinclair 1000 on a store shelf, that's about it. But I wonder if its keyboard was as painful to use as the Atari 400 I had for a while (before I gave it up for a C64, a much better fit). My fingertips ache even thinking about typing a small program on one of those.

I wanted a Schwinn so bad, to participate with my friends but my Dad was unaware which bicycle i wanted and saw this Raleigh and it was love at first sight and was even better than the Schwinn Chopper! Blew my mind at Christmas how he was able to hide this bicycle without me discovering it? I had a unique blue metalic Fleck paint Raleigh chopper with 3 speed shifter and the black metalic fleck vinyl stubby banana seat was unlike those in your documentary and wonder if my Dad had reverse engineered it? Nothing like it existed and my friends marveled how much more exciting my Raleih looked than their Schwinn Choppers. Every one stopped me desiring to ride it and make ramp jumps with it! Sadly i took it joy riding down a steep hill, and it began to wobble and increase unmanageable speed and i flew over the sissy bars and fell chin first into the pavement and deep laceration on my chin with blood vessels exposed and scrapes to my face arms kneas hands was rushed to the hospital. I suffered minor injuries with exception to surgically sew up my flap on my chin and my bicycle was all banged up. After that, i never peddled on that steep hill and eventually was given an older model schwinn with balloon tires with Wam-moe’s Var room motorised sound maker toy engine, but still liked using spring loaded clothes pin with playing card against the spokes making the sound of a motor cycle as the spokes inter mittantly flipped the playing card through the inter laces as the wheel spun around. (We kids were so innovative for our generation.) Thank you for sharing this documentary with us since i never knew all this info about this. Wish i still had the bike although at age 65 it deserves a younger audience of chopper bicycle enthusiests

Two things to note on the Z1: You should really pull a floormat out and put it over the open door before getting in, the amount of Z1 driving around with scratched up doors is insane. Sand and dirt falls off shoes and gets lodged between the door and its gaskets. Also, at the time there was a law that a "doorless" car had to have a retention strut or chain in the opening. BMW didn't want that, so they invited the head of the TÜV to their testing grounds. He took a seat in the car and their test driver tried his best to dislodge the man from his seat. He failed, so the TÜV agreed that you couldn't be flung from the vehicle with the door open, and BMW got an exemption from the law.

I saw this video, and as a Corvair enthusiast. I believe this also happened with the Corvair. Chevrolet or GM made decisions that lead to the production of the Corvair. It turned into an expensive dead end for GM to make. I think it's cool that Corvairs exist but from a business standpoint a car like the Chevy II would have been a better choice. I guess from an emotional standpoint I'm glad they did the Corvair. Sometimes companies can make wonderful cars from what starts out to be a questionable concept.

Ah yes, the RCA of Japan. In the end, touting about how they invented VHS was all they had. I have 3 cassette decks built by JVC from 1984-1986. Built like absolute tanks and sound incredible. This was peak JVC from my perspective. Fast forward 10 years and it was all plastic junk. Another 10 years and the brand had all but disappeared and became irrelevant...again, from the perspective of as a consumer.

Dark Side of the Moon with AAD on the label is by far the best CD version. It's just a direct re-master into digital, with no one messing around with the mix. That goes for all pre digital recordings. AAD everytime. I also have a huge LP collection starting from the 60s. I do not have pops or scratches on my records as I looked after them, and now own an ultrasonic cleaner. I enjoyed your video, I'm not trying to be nasty.

I worked as a graduate trainee for Austin Rover in 1986 - the management hadn’t improved, renaming on my contract to be sponsored to the RCA to punish another student who had not returned to the company after being sponsored to Art Center. Punishment for someone else’s problem didn’t sit right, so I left the UK motor industry for good. With many successful GM and Porsche products on the road I have never regretted that decision….

As brilliant as this SEEMS on the surface, it is only that... an apparent surface-level brilliancy. Like many such concepts, it "disappeared" because it would pass NO safety regulations. A moderately damaged car door can still open (and/or can be opened via "the jaws of life"). This thing could not. How would you like to be in your Tesla while it's battery is going up in flames and have to contend with this electronic monstrosity to expediate your escape from the inferno? These doors are perfect for a perfect world...ergo hinged doors.
